Kazbegi

Where the Greater Caucasus touches the sky

A complete guide to Kazbegi — what to see, how to get there, and when to climb to Gergeti

Where the Greater Caucasus touches the sky

Kazbegi — or, officially, Stepantsminda — is where Georgia feels most adventurous. A small 14th-century church stands on a hill above the clouds, green valleys open between snowy peaks, and the mountains around are so high it’s hard to believe this is still Europe.

The road here is part of the experience — not just the destination.

The Military Highway — the gateway to Kazbegi

What it is: about 150 km from Tbilisi, two or three hours’ drive, along the Military Highway — one of the most beautiful routes in the Caucasus. It passes lakes, ancient fortresses and a mountain pass at 2,395 m.

Must-stops along the way:

  • Ananuri fortress — a 17th-century fortress on the shore of the Zhinvali reservoir
  • Gudauri — a viewpoint, restaurants and a ski option in winter
  • The Gudauri pass — views of the snowy peaks and the valley below

Tip: leave Tbilisi before 09:00. By midday the road fills up, and the stops along the way deserve time.

What to see in Kazbegi

1. Gergeti church

What it is: a small 14th-century church on a hill at 2,170 m, with direct views of the summit of Kazbek — 5,054 m. One of Georgia’s most recognizable images: a small stone dome, an immense mountain behind.

Getting there: a hike from the village — about 3–4 hours round trip, with an ascent of some 400 m. Also by 4x4 — about 20–30 lari per person — if you’d rather not walk.

Tip: set off early, before 08:00. By midday clouds cover the summit and the trail fills up.

2. The Juta valley

What it is: a mountain valley with views of snowy peaks, trails among pastures and rivers, and the option to stay in simple guesthouses in the village of Juta.

Getting there: by 4x4 from Stepantsminda — about 30 minutes. Entry about 5 lari.

Tip: a whole day — better combined with Gergeti on separate days, not both in one day.

3. The Truso valley

What it is: a valley with mineral springs, colored pools and absolute silence. Less touristy than Juta, and completely different scenery — more geology, less mountain.

Getting there: only by 4x4 or with a local driver — the road isn’t suitable for a private car without experience.

Tip: come with shoes you don’t mind dirtying — the colored pools are worth a photo, but the ground is wet.

Accommodation and food

Stepantsminda — the main village. Simple hotels, guesthouses and restaurants with khinkali and khachapuri. Prices lower than in Tbilisi.

What to bring: a warm layer (even in summer), a rain jacket, closed shoes for the hike and cash — not everywhere takes cards.

Tip: the “Stepantsminda” restaurant in the village — one of the most reliable local spots for Georgian mountain food. Hotels in Stepantsminda | Tours to Gergeti

How to get there

Private driver / minibus: from Tbilisi — the most comfortable, with stops along the way. The minibus leaves from the central station; a private driver gives flexibility.

Bolt: expensive for a whole day, but possible for a couple who want comfort without driving.

Tip: a night in Kazbegi is worth more than a day trip. The morning in the village, before the tourists arrive, is the authentic moment. Whoever comes only for the day misses the sunset over Gergeti and the calm of the morning.
