Who this itinerary is for
For those who want Georgia’s high mountains in depth — not just a photo stop at Gergeti, but several days in the heart of the Caucasus. Five days in a loop from Tbilisi and back, all along the historic axis of the Georgian Military Highway. There’s winding mountain driving and easy-to-moderate trails (Truso, Juta, Gergeti) — no climber’s fitness needed, but a willingness to walk several hours at altitude. It’s the natural follow-on for those who’ve already seen Tbilisi and want the wild side.
Day by day
Day 1: Tbilisi → Ananuri → Gudauri → Kazbegi
Morning: head north on the Military Highway. First stop at Ananuri fortress on the shore of the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir — walls, churches and a tower, one of the prettiest stops on the road.
Afternoon: climb to Gudauri. Stop at the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument — a mosaic-decorated terrace hanging over a deep canyon. Continue over the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda).

Tip: leave Tbilisi early — the Military Highway fills with trucks heading to the border, and the morning is cloud-free.
Day 2: Gergeti — the Trinity Church
Morning: the hike to Gergeti — a 14th-century church on a ridge, with Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) behind it. A walk up of about 1.5–2 hours from Stepantsminda, or by 4x4 for those who prefer.
Afternoon: rest in the village, or one more short hike toward the Kazbek ridge. Evening in Stepantsminda with views of the summit.
Tip: cloud settles on the summit in the afternoon — hike in the morning to see Kazbek clear.
Day 3: The Truso valley
A whole day in the Truso valley — one of the most beautiful and least touristy valleys in the Caucasus. A walk along the Tergi River among mineral springs that stain the rock orange, travertine deposits, abandoned stone towers and a ghost village. About 12–14 km round trip, almost all flat.

Tip: the entrance to Truso sometimes needs a high vehicle to the trailhead — check the road condition in advance.
Day 4: Juta and Chaukhi / the Gveleti waterfalls
Morning: a trip to the village of Juta and a hike toward the Chaukhi peaks — an amphitheater of rock towers and a mountain lake. One of the prettiest hikes in the area, moderate difficulty.
Afternoon: on the way back — the Gveleti waterfalls and the Dariali gorge by the Russian border. Last night in Kazbegi.
Tip: for those who’d prefer a lighter day — you can swap Juta for rest in the village and local hot baths.
Day 5: Kazbegi → Tbilisi
Descend south on the Military Highway, with last stops at the points you skipped (Gudauri, Ananuri) and Mtskheta on the way to the capital — Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari Monastery. Arrival in Tbilisi in the afternoon.
Tip: if there’s time, finish in Mtskheta — 20 minutes from Tbilisi, it closes the historic loop of the Military Highway.
Transport along the itinerary
| Leg | Recommended mode | Notes |

| Rental car | Possible in season | Not advisable in winter — snow and closed passes |
| Marshrutka | Tbilisi ↔ Stepantsminda | Cheap, but no stops along the way |
Tip: in winter the Jvari Pass sometimes closes for snow — this itinerary is mainly for May–October.

| Item | Estimated cost |
|---|---|

GULITRAVEL tip: the magic of this itinerary is the side valleys — Truso and Juta — that most travelers skip. Two full days there turn “another Gergeti day trip” into a real mountain route.
