Georgia in winter

Georgia in winter

Skiing, snow and hot baths

While the lowlands are rainy, the Caucasus is blanketed in powder. Georgia is a great-value, lesser-known ski destination — here's how to plan a winter trip.

Georgia doesn’t stop in winter — it just shifts gear. The Caucasus turns into a skiing paradise, the capital fills with a cozy atmosphere and the sulfur baths take on a new meaning.

Gudauri

The main ski resort, on the “Military Highway,” about two hours from Tbilisi (from around 2,000 m altitude). Wide pistes, excellent off-piste skiing and prices far lower than the Alps. Suitable for beginners and advanced skiers alike.

What it is: Gudauri is known for heli-skiing and freeride — deep powder and open slopes that draw experienced skiers from all over the world.

Bakuriani

A quieter, family resort near Borjomi. Gentle slopes, ideal for children and learners, and a pleasant rural atmosphere. A good option for families.

Tbilisi in winter

The capital is pleasant in the cold too: warm cafés, sulfur baths, mulled wine and fewer tourists. December and January bring Christmas markets and a festive mood. Combine two or three days in the city with the ski days.

Season and prices

The ski season runs from December to March–April, with the best snow in January and February. Gear rental and lift passes are far cheaper than in Europe. It’s worth booking accommodation ahead on weekends.

Getting there: the road to Gudauri crosses a mountain pass — on stormy days it can close temporarily. An experienced driver who knows the route makes the difference.

A classic winter holiday: Tbilisi (two days) + Gudauri (3–4 days of skiing) — short, good value and close.
