Getting around Georgia
Georgia is a country where distances look small on the map — but the mountain roads turn every trip into an event. Tbilisi itself has efficient public transport, and between cities you can choose a cheap minibus, a train with views, or a private driver who gives total flexibility.
Within Tbilisi
- Metro: two main lines — fast, cheap (1 ₾ per ride) and connecting the center with important stations.
- Metromoney: a rechargeable card — essential. Top it up at the station machines. One ride includes free transfers within the next 90 minutes.
- Bolt: the only app worth using — price shown upfront, reliable drivers, card payment.
- Street taxis: avoid them. Inflated prices, no meter and sometimes no agreed price.
Between cities
| Mode | Pro | Con |
|---|---|---|
| Minibus | Cheap, leaves often | Crowded, awkward with big luggage |
| Train | Incredible views, cheap | Slow, limited routes |
| Private driver | Flexible, comfortable, stops at will | More expensive |
| Domestic flight | Fast (TBS↔BUS, TBS↔Mestia) | Not always available, seasonal |
Tip: minibuses leave from Didube station in Tbilisi — arrive 15 minutes early, because they wait to fill the seats rather than follow a fixed schedule.
When a driver-guide is worth it
- The Military Highway and Kazbegi — photo stops, historical explanations and safe driving on the mountain road.
- Kakheti — wine, meals and no desire to drive after the tastings.
- Svaneti — tough roads, the GPS isn’t always accurate, the weather changes fast.
- 3 travelers or more — sometimes cheaper than the minibus, and certainly more comfortable.
Driving licence
For many visitors — an international driving permit is not required for three months. Driving is on the right. Note: mountain roads demand experience.
Tip
Book a driver through GULITRAVEL — they speak Russian and English, know every stop and route, and take the stress of mountain-road driving off you.
